Calgary’s food scene is still very much in its infancy, although it is showing signs of growing up very quickly.
In the past the majority of Calgary Restaurants could be classified as glorified steak houses or big chain restaurants that just didn’t fit the bill when compared to the restaurants of places like Vancouver, Montreal, New York, or San Francisco. Our food scene was simply behind.
In recent years however, Calgary has begun to come into its own. With new restaurants such as Petite (reopening November 21,2011), Taste, District, and Charcut enlightening Calgarians – and shedding light into what food could be.
Sure, the old stalwarts like Caesers, Smugglers, and the Rimrock Grill are nice every now and then for a big juicy Alberta Beef steak, but the food that the new stars of Calgary’s food scene are serving up are beyond what any steak could hope to be. Calgary now boasts some of the most delicious charcuteries, street food, and in some cases comfort food that Canada and even the world have ever seen. With a trend towards local ingredients and unorthodox combinations (duck fat poutine anyone?), Calgarians are enjoying food today that was beyond comprehension just a few short years ago.
Furthermore, Calgary is now playing in the big leagues when it comes to celebrity chefs. While we have a long way to go, the acquisition of Chefs like Connie DeSousa, who has had every opportunity imaginable in San Francisco’s restaurant industry, are a huge win for Calgary. When a chef like Connie chooses Calgary as a food mecca in the making, it becomes obvious that the future of Calgary restaurants is bright.
Its time to get out there and start enjoying the wonderful world of food that Calgary now has to offer, and we would love the opportunity to be your guide.
Happy eating,
Nolan & Jen
