Facebook Burger Contest

A couple of weeks ago we posted a request for burger recipes, with our favorite to be posted on Calgaryfoodies.com. We received several recipes, all delicious in their own right. However, our favorite was chosen not necessarily because of the ingredients, but because of the way it was cooked – in the oven. This recipe brings bbq inside and can be cooked year round without the risk of frozen fingers. Congrats to Ling  Cullen on her recipe!

I had to adapt “The Classic” from a BBQ burger recipe to an Oven/broiler burger once I moved and no longer had a BBQ to use. “The BBQ-less Classic” is about getting the BBQ sear without a BBQ.

Heat a cast iron skillet in your oven while it …preheats to 400 degrees.

Burgers that I make are usually just the sirloin ground patties from costco; sometimes I will do a 50/50 groundbeef and turkey mix(though really not as “classic”)

In my 10 inch skillet I can cook two burgers at a time. Take your hot castiron skillet out of the oven and put it on the stove top burner turned to medium. (this will help maintain the heat the CastIron has stored)

Put your burgers down on the pan and leave it for at least 2 whole minutes, or when you can tell the pan has released your patties. Flip them over and replace the whole pan back into your 400 degree oven for a hot finish.

The end result should be a wonderfully browned, yet still juicy burger just like the BBQ used to make! (sniffsniff I miss you BBQ)

(I am a weirdo and still like my burger Medium so you can sort of just cook it till your desired doneness.)

Look no further on the toppings front than : sliced tomato, sliced pickle, lettuce, banana peppers.

Serve up on a grainy, chewy whole wheat bun. (or you know whatever sorta bun you like)

So you have a contest asking for people to submit their burger 'recipes' and then the winner is a costco pre-made burger? And then you say it is not really the recipe that was the reason for selecting it but the way it was cooked. Seriously have you never cooked a burger indoors before? I find it quite funny how intrigued you are with a burger cooked in a cast iron pan.

Don't mean to sound harsh it just seems funny how unoriginal the recipe that you chose was. Too funny.

My bad, I have never noticed anthing but frozen at Costco. Please accept my apologies.

Regardless, while I can appreciate the inventiveness of a different cooking method, I was still disappointed that the winner was a pre formed patty baked in the oven. I honestly don't mean to knock it, but I was looking forward I guess, to some new and inventive burger flavours. But hey, it was not my contest. No offense was or is intended.

I personally think costco has some of the best meat you can buy. From steaks to ground meat to chickens, it tends to be the freshest and highest quality of all the big chain grocers.

hey Nolan,

my friend who had dinner with you told me that I had won a prize that I never collected. I am confused.. did I win a prize?

Sorry, not to be mean but.. a costco frozen patty baked in the oven wins?? Really?

I missed the contest, but I would like to see the other entries. Surely there was something more creative than frozen patties? How bout lamb burgers served with naan, balsamic tomatoes and chunky tzatziki?

Hi Princess_Jules,

Thank you for your response. I can appreciate your sentiments as I am generally a "make it from scratch" kinda gal. I make all my own marinades, dressings, Nolan makes pasta and sauces as well. In Ling's defense she does say she uses the Costco patty, but also uses her own concoction of 50/50 beef and turkey. I recently watched an episode of on the food network where Giada De Laurentiis used store bought cake mix in place of scratch ingredients to save time and effort. Ling's recipe is the perfect example that in a pinch store bought can be pretty darn tasty.

The reason we picked it wasn't really for ingredients at all but more technique of bringing the tasty BBQ goodness into the kitchen. A perfect alternative for those of us that either don't want to brave the winter for a grilled burger or don't have a BBQ at all.

Lamb burger on Naan with with Tzatziki and balsamic sounds AWESOME though. Send us the recipe and we will post it for all to savour and enjoy!

Thanks for posting!
Jen

Actually, the patties from Costco are Unfrozen made from pure ground sirloin. I don't use frozen meat at all.

Hey guys! thanks for picking my recipe.
I made these on friday, and they were just as yummy as ever!
